A rail pad, also called rail rubber plate, is designed between the rail tie plate and foot of the rail, made by an elastic polyurethane mat, which is interposed between steel rails and tie sleepers to protect the sleeper top from wearing and impacting. It’s always fastened within a fastening system by screw spikes or rail bolts into the sleeper ties.

When it is used on the rail tracks, it is attached to concrete sleeper, rather than timber or wooden sleeper. Now for rail track structure in the world, concrete sleeper is widely used in many countries. But compared with wooden sleeper, the shortcoming of concrete sleeper is lack of insulation and elasticity. The rubber pad is an integral part of the railway fastening system, which is used for an elastic cushion between the rail and the tie plate located on the concrete sleeper. Its main role is to cushion the impact and vibration of train vehicles when train’ passing to protect sub-grade and concrete sleeper, and to make electric insulation for the railway signal systems.

3. Rail pad special designation
The rail pad function is to reduce fatigue cracking of the concrete ties, which is believed to be driven by impact and vibration from the passing train. When the wheel is running over the rubber pad, the latter’s rigidity shall be enough to prevent larger movements which can result in the loose of rail clip. Such a load-deflection feature can be obtained by grooves in the rubber pad. Rubber rail pads are normally designed to a specified load-deflection characteristic.
